Gary Neville has advised Liverpool manager Arne Slot to abandon his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and introduce Joe Gomez at right-back in an attempt to rescue the Reds' season. The call comes after Liverpool slipped to 11th in the Premier League table following a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
The reigning champions have lost six of their last seven league matches and eight of their last 11 games across all competitions. Despite a £450m spending spree that saw the signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, most new arrivals have struggled to hit their stride.
Neville, speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, said: 'The manager has to change the style or the system and help them. It means being more solid in midfield and the back, and personnel changes.' He suggested a 4-4-2 formation with a narrow back four and midfield, potentially leaving Mohamed Salah out or pairing Hugo Ekitike with Isak up front.
Neville added: 'Something has to change in the collective in terms of how they are going to play. Slot is a brilliant manager with real class, but he's got to reverse and do something different - maybe make some difficult decisions.'
