The decision was made to 'prioritise the safety and security of the Minneapolis community' after 37-year-old Alex Pretti was killed during a confrontation with officers less than two miles from the Target Center, where the Timberwolves play. The Minnesota National Guard was deployed to assist local police as protesters gathered near the shooting site.
The Minnesota Twins ended their annual winter fan festival at Target Field an hour early to facilitate the 'expedited departure' of all guests. The incident came after thousands marched through downtown Minneapolis on Friday in sub-zero temperatures to protest the presence of around 3,000 federal officers deployed for an immigration crackdown.
Two weeks earlier, 37-year-old Renee Good was fatally shot in her car after a confrontation with officers. The Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Good before their game the following night.
