Murphy's stunner earns Newcastle 1-1 draw at Fulham
Murphy strike earns Newcastle 1-1 draw at Fulham

Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage, responding to back-to-back defeats to Everton with a point in West London, though they will be disappointed not to have taken all three.

Jacob Murphy scored his first goal of the season in the second half, cutting inside and firing a left-footed strike past Bernd Leno from 25 yards. Fulham equalised three minutes later when Rodrigo Muniz bundled the ball past Lukas Hornicek from close range after Newcastle failed to clear Cesar Palacios' cross.

Jaissle change pays off but not the one you'd expect

Jaissle made wholesale changes as he looked to get Newcastle back to winning ways. Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn were paired together for the first time this season in the centre of defence, and Sean Steur and Nico Gonzalez started together in midfield for the first time, despite his previous assertion he would only start one or the other.

He also recalled Murphy and Wissa to the front four alongside Harvey Barnes and Will Osula. Of the four changes, it was Murphy - arguably the biggest gamble of them all - who made the biggest impact.

His cross from the right in the first half should have been scored by Barnes, and his cross was turned in by Dan Burn before it was disallowed. Then his stunning strike opened the scoring, with Murphy letting out a roar in front of the away end.

The 31-year-old has his detractors but is a moments player, and when the team is not at its flowing best those moments are needed to dig out results.

New Dedic chant

Amar Dedic being stopped by the police with a bow and arrow this week did not escape the attention of the away end, who responded with a chant. In the second half, after Dedic whipped in a cross which Osula could not stretch to connect to, the away end serenaded the Bosnian international with chants of: 'He's Dedic, you know, he's good with a bow and arrow.'

Injured trio return

Jaissle was able to recall Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley to the squad after their respective injuries, while Matias Fernandez-Pardo was also named in the squad after missing three matches through illness.

All three players were not in a position to start and had to make do with a place on the bench, but Miley and Fernandez-Pardo made their return to the pitch from the bench and got through it unscathed. Neither player is joining up with their respective national squads, and they have two weeks to get closer to full fitness ahead of the visit of Arsenal.

Bamba axe speaks volumes

Aladji Bamba was not even named in the matchday squad against Fulham. Despite midfielders Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton missing through suspension and injury respectively, Bamba was the player to drop out to accommodate the return of Fernandez-Pardo, Livramento and Miley.

Newcastle could pay up to £35million for Bamba, who joined from Monaco in the summer, but he is yet to make a competitive start for the club and has been restricted to just 27 minutes of action. He is felt to be the seventh choice for two spots in Jaissle's midfield, behind Nico Gonzalez, Sean Steur, Joe Willock, Miley, Ramsey and Joelinton, and his axe from the matchday squad reaffirmed that.

London record continues

Newcastle had been consistent at picking up wins in the capital, having beaten both Tottenham and Crystal Palace 2-0 away from home in the Premier League and also beaten Millwall 1-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The draw at Craven Cottage ensures they remain unbeaten in the capital this season.
