Willie Mullins Aims for Historic Third Straight Grand National Victory
Mullins Targets Third Consecutive Grand National Win

Grand National Returns with Willie Mullins Eyeing Historic Hat-Trick

The world's most famous horse race is set to captivate audiences once again as the Grand National kicks off at 4pm on Saturday at Aintree. A field of 34 runners will compete, with trainer Willie Mullins aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive victory in this iconic event. Daily Mail Sport provides an ultimate guide, including runner ratings and a sweepstake kit for fans to join in the excitement.

Mullins's Remarkable Journey at Aintree

Willie Mullins has transformed into a dominant force at Aintree, boasting three Grand National wins, including back-to-back triumphs with I Am Maximus in 2024 and Nick Rockett in 2025. His relationship with the race began with early setbacks, but perseverance has paid off spectacularly. Last year, Mullins achieved a historic 1-2-3 finish with Nick Rockett, I Am Maximus, and Grangeclare West, a feat that left him emotional and solidified his status as a jumps training legend.

Based in Closutton, County Carlow, Mullins has been Great Britain's champion jumps trainer for the past two years, a title earned partly through his stellar performances at Aintree. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, 'Aintree has grown into a huge week, and we've had a beano there the last couple of years. Last year, I never took my eyes off Patrick from the Canal Turn.' His early runners, such as Micko's Dream and Hedgehunter, faced challenges, but lessons learned propelled him to success, with Hedgehunter returning to win in 2005.

Strong Contingent for 2026 Race

This year, Mullins fields a powerful team of eight runners, led by the favourite I Am Maximus, ridden by Paul Townend. Other contenders include Spanish Harlem, Lecky Watson, Champ Kiely, High Class Hero, Captain Cody, and Quai De Bourbon. Grangeclare West, owned by Cheveley Park Stud and mounted by Mullins's son Patrick, is also a top prospect. Richard Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud expressed his dream of seeing their colours win, recalling watching Red Rum's third National victory in 1977.

Mullins is poised to emulate Dr Vincent O'Brien, the only trainer to saddle three straight National winners from 1953 to 1955. With his stable's strength at an all-time high, it's hard to imagine any of his runners being among the also-rans. He noted, 'The year before we had eight runners and I thought any of these could win—only one did, I Am Maximus, the rest were nowhere.' This year, expectations are sky-high for another dominant showing.
