Karolina Muchova saved a match point to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (2) in a dramatic semi-final at the Birmingham Classic on Saturday. The Czech world No. 42 rallied from the brink of defeat to secure her spot in the final, where she could face compatriot Linda Noskova.
Match Point Saved in Thrilling Decider
Muchova trailed 5-4 in the final set and faced a match point on her own serve at 30-40. She saved it with a bold forehand winner, then broke Cocciaretto in the next game to take a 6-5 lead. The set went to a tiebreak, where Muchova dominated 7-2 to seal victory after two hours and 39 minutes.
“Honestly it was such a big fight, a rollercoaster, match point down, I don’t even know what I’m saying. I’m shaking, but I’m good. The atmosphere here was indescribable. Not many players get to play on this court. It’s incredible,” Muchova said after the match.
Potential All-Czech Final
Muchova’s win sets up the possibility of an all-Czech final, as Noskova faces Marta Kostyuk in the second semi-final later on Saturday. A Czech winner would be the sixth from the country at the Birmingham Classic, following Martina Navratilova, Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, Marketa Vondrousova, and Barbora Krejcikova. Czech players have a strong history on grass, with Kvitova winning Wimbledon twice and Vondrousova reaching the 2023 final.
Muchova's Comeback Continues
Muchova, who reached the 2023 French Open final, has been rebuilding her ranking after a series of injuries. This is her first tournament final since that Roland Garros run. She credited the Birmingham crowd for helping her through the tough moments. “The crowd was amazing, they really pushed me. I’m just so happy to be through,” she added.
