David Moyes has expressed his desire to lend a helping hand to his former club West Ham United by securing a victory against their relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. The Everton manager acknowledged that a win in north London would significantly boost the Hammers' chances of survival, provided Nuno Espirito Santo's side also overcome Leeds United in their own fixture.
Moyes on Balancing Loyalty and Ambition
Speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, Moyes stated: "I would love to keep West Ham in the league if I can. But it is more important that I get Everton a top-half finish and we try to secure a few more million pounds due to our league position, which is so vital for the club." He added that the true value of such an achievement often becomes apparent only in hindsight, years down the line.
Call for Summer Investment
The former West Ham boss has urged Everton's owners, The Friedkin Group, to back the team in the summer transfer window following what is likely to be at least a mid-table finish. This represents a significant improvement after several seasons of battling relegation, though Moyes expressed regret that a late-season push for European qualification ultimately fell short.
"I believe that is what we need to do as a football club—we need to show ambition," Moyes emphasised. "The ownership, I want them to come out and demonstrate that they are here to support us. I know Everton fans have endured too many difficult days. This season has provided a glimmer of brightness, a ray of sunshine, and we must build on that. We cannot afford to think we have done enough. In every press conference, I have been saying, 'Let's push for Europe.'"
Moyes expressed confidence that the board will provide the necessary backing to complete the next piece of the puzzle. However, he acknowledged the financial constraints, noting: "We are not a club that can spend £200-300 million—we do not have that capability. We need to be shrewd, dodge and weave, and hopefully make the right choices."
Contract News
In positive news for Everton, left-back Vitalii Mykolenko is reportedly close to signing a new contract with the club, securing his long-term future at Goodison Park.
