Mourinho's Intervention: How Chelsea Outbid Liverpool for Salah in 2014

Jose Mourinho has disclosed that he personally intervened to prevent Mohamed Salah from joining Liverpool in 2014, instead orchestrating a move to Chelsea that temporarily derailed the Egyptian's Premier League ambitions. The Reds had identified Salah as a target during the January transfer window while he was at Basel, but Mourinho's aggressive pursuit saw Chelsea outbid their rivals, securing the winger's signature.

Salah's Challenging Start at Chelsea and Italian Revival

During his initial stint in English football, Salah struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, making only 19 appearances before being loaned to Fiorentina in 2015 and later sold to Roma. His underwhelming spell at Chelsea contrasted sharply with his subsequent success, but it was his impressive performances in Serie A that reignited Liverpool's interest.

In 2017, Liverpool finalised a £34.3 million deal to bring Salah back to the Premier League, a transfer that has since been hailed as one of the club's most astute signings. Mourinho, however, has faced persistent criticism for allowing Salah to leave Chelsea, a narrative he vehemently disputes.

Mourinho's Defence: "I Bought Salah, I Did Not Let Him Go"

In a 2023 interview on The Obi One podcast, Mourinho clarified his role, stating, "When people say, 'You let Salah go', I say exactly the opposite. I bought Salah. I was the one that said, 'Buy that guy'. He was going from Basel to Liverpool, and I made a fight. I made a war to make him come to Chelsea."

He attributed Salah's departure to the player's impatience and Chelsea's subsequent decision to sell, emphasising, "Then comes the part to be a Chelsea player, you need to perform or have to wait. He didn't want to wait and wanted to go on loan and then Chelsea at a certain point decided to sell. That was not me."

Salah's Triumphant Return and Liverpool Legacy

Despite the initial setback, Salah's determination to prove himself in England paid dividends at Liverpool. Reflecting on his motivation, Salah told Sky Sports in 2021, "I think when I was at Chelsea I came here and Liverpool were fighting for the title and the atmosphere was unbelievable. And I said, 'Wow, I want to play here one day.'"

He added, "That's why when I was in Rome and there was talk between the clubs, I said I would love to play there, the atmosphere is unbelievable and I wanted to come back to England to prove people wrong, I didn't have my chance there with Chelsea, and I wanted to come back."

Over nine years at Anfield, Salah amassed a remarkable record, scoring 255 goals in 435 appearances and securing major trophies including the Premier League and Champions League. He also won four Golden Boot awards, cementing his status as a Liverpool legend.

Farewell to Anfield: Salah Confirms Summer Departure

In a heartfelt social media announcement this week, Salah confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, marking the end of an era. He expressed, "Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season."

Salah continued, "I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club."

He concluded emotionally, "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."

This revelation from Mourinho adds a new layer to the saga of Salah's career, highlighting the pivotal moments that shaped his journey from a contested transfer target to a Premier League icon.
