New South Wales State of Origin prop Mitchell Barnett has confirmed his departure from the New Zealand Warriors at the conclusion of the 2026 season, citing his child's medical requirements as the primary reason for ending his tenure in New Zealand early.
Family First Decision for Barnett
The 31-year-old enforcer was originally contracted until the end of 2027 but successfully requested an early release to relocate his family back to Australia. Barnett aims to be closer to their support network in Taree on the New South Wales mid-north coast, emphasising that this move is driven solely by family needs rather than football considerations.
'It's extremely hard coming to this decision,' Barnett told News Corp. 'The decision I've made is the one that's best for my family. This is based purely on our child's medical needs and our need to be back around family going forward.'
He added, 'I'm a father and husband before a footballer and that's why, ultimately, I'm extremely comfortable with the decision.'
Warriors Support Early Release
The Warriors granted Barnett a release from the final year of his contract, prioritising family welfare over contractual obligations in a move that has surprised many across the National Rugby League. Warriors CEO Cameron George expressed the club's understanding and support for Barnett's situation.
'We're very sad to see this happen but Mitch and his family need to be back home,' George stated. 'He has become such a big part of our club. We love having him here and we know how much he loves it, too, but it's important he, Clare and their boys are back around their family support network.'
Barnett's Career and Future Prospects
Barnett has been in discussions with coach Andrew Webster and club management since November as his family circumstances evolved. While he chose not to disclose specific details about his child's condition, he clarified that the decision was not motivated by football factors.
'Predominantly the family we're trying to get close to is in Taree,' Barnett explained. 'I think, you know, any of those sort of teams around NSW or Queensland, where it will be easily accessible for family narrows it down, but there's been no discussion.'
Since his NRL debut in 2015, Barnett has played 177 games, including 126 appearances for the Newcastle Knights before moving to Auckland. His impressive form with the Warriors earned him State of Origin and Kangaroos honours, though his tenure was marred by a devastating ACL injury last season. He is expected to return early in the 2026 campaign.
Commitment to Final Season
Despite the personal challenges, Barnett remains dedicated to performing strongly in his last season with the Warriors. 'I've got a clear direction on where I'm going and what's required of me as a footballer,' he said. 'We've got real clear direction on where we're going as a family, so it will free my mind up for this season so that I can give it my all.'
His destination for 2027 remains uncertain, with clubs in New South Wales and Queensland emerging as logical options. For now, Barnett's focus is firmly on his family and honouring his final season in Warriors colours.
