The brother of Vickrum Digwa, who murdered University of Southampton student Henry Nowak, called 999 and falsely claimed they had been racially attacked. In the call, Gurpreet Digwa told the operator: 'Yeah, we've just been attacked racially. Yeah, this f***er. Yeah, we just got attacked racially by some white person.'
Digwa, 21, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 21 years for stabbing Nowak, 20, twice in the back of the legs and once in the heart. The attack occurred near Digwa's home in Southampton. Digwa filmed the dying student and told him 'I am a bad man' moments before the stabbing.
Prosecutor Nicholas Lobbenberg KC said Digwa's 'wicked lie' meant Nowak died alone, humiliated and handcuffed. Digwa also claimed Nowak had used a racist slur and knocked off his turban, but Judge William Mousley KC ruled: 'I am sure that Henry said nothing racist.'
Digwa was also convicted of carrying a knife with a 21cm blade. In a statement, Nowak's mother Lucy said: 'Henry was ambitious, determined and full of life... that future has been cruelly taken away.' Digwa's family apologised through Sikh PA, saying: 'The loss of a young life is a grief that no family should ever have to carry.'
