Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley has suffered a hamstring injury, with the club hoping the issue is not serious. The 19-year-old was left out of the squad for the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and remained at home as his team secured the victory.
Miley, who has featured in midfield and at right-back this season, is now a doubt for the Carabao Cup last-16 tie at Everton on Thursday. He had only recently recovered from a knock sustained on England Under-21 duty at the start of the month, managing to play through the problem in matches against Coventry City and Aston Villa. However, he dropped out of contention again after a glutes issue last week.
Jaissle confirms injury setback
Speaking after the win over Palace, head coach Jaissle said: "Unfortunately, he was not able to be in the squad at Palace due to an issue with his glutes. But hopefully, we will bring him back as soon as possible." He added: "The medical department is doing a great job."
Miley had previously missed part of pre-season after suffering a broken leg. Jaissle had earlier commented on his progress: "He is not 100% fit, yet he performed the level he did against Hull in an unfamiliar position; he is still a young lad and is very talented. We should not give him so much pressure and let him develop."
Other absentees ahead of Everton trip
Newcastle also hope that Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who missed the trip to London, will have recovered from a sickness bug. Jaissle explained: "During the match he was not feeling 100%. He has been suffering with a sickness feeling. So you also need to consider that."
The club's injury list also includes Tino Livramento (knee) and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen (thigh) ahead of the Merseyside trip to face Everton.
