Mido Slams AFCON Decision to Strip Senegal as 'Biggest Scandal'

Former Premier League star Mido has launched a scathing attack on the decision to strip Senegal of their African Cup of Nations title, branding it "the biggest scandal" in football history. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the bombshell ruling, which sees Senegal forfeit the trophy they won earlier this year.

Controversial Final and Regulatory Fallout

Senegal claimed the AFCON title with a 2-1 victory over Morocco in the final, but the match was marred by controversy. A 16-minute delay occurred after Moroccan players left the pitch following a penalty award, with Sadio Mane eventually persuading them to return. According to Article 82 of AFCON regulations, a team that refuses to play or leaves the ground without referee authorisation is considered a loser and eliminated from the competition.

CAF's Appeal Board invoked Article 84, declaring Senegal to have forfeited the final, with the result recorded as 3-0 in favour of Morocco. A statement explained this decision, citing regulatory breaches during the match.

Mido's Fiery Response on Social Media

Mido, the former Tottenham and West Ham striker, took to X to express his outrage. He wrote, "CAF is a real joke!! I have been saying this for years. Most of the African legends who are involved in CAF events are CLOWNS. The decision to take away the Cup from Senegal and hand it to Morocco is the biggest scandal in the history of football."

He emphasised that Senegal deserved the title based on their on-pitch performance, stating, "You lost on the pitch, Senegal were the better team at the final, they deserve to be the champions of Africa. It's clear simple and you all know it!!" Mido clarified he holds no animosity towards Morocco, saying, "I'm not here against Morocco. I love Morocco and I love Moroccans... but come on guys this is gone too far!!"

Calls for Overhaul in African Football

Mido's comments extend beyond this incident, calling for systemic change. He asserted, "There must be a revolution in African football. All these people must go and today not Tomorrow!!" His critique highlights broader concerns about governance and integrity within CAF, echoing sentiments from fans and analysts who question the fairness of the decision.

The stripping of Senegal's title has sparked widespread debate, with many arguing that such rulings undermine the spirit of sport. As discussions continue, this controversy underscores the need for transparency and reform in football administration across Africa.
