Senegal Fans Slam 'Unjust' Afcon Decision to Strip Title as 'Biggest Scandal'

Senegalese football fans have expressed shock and anger after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped Senegal of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco, a decision described as the 'biggest scandal' by former Egyptian star Mido. The ruling, announced on Tuesday, came after Morocco appealed against Senegal's 1-0 victory in the final, citing a 15-minute walk-off by Senegalese players in protest at a penalty decision.

Alhassan Hann, a 23-year-old university student in Dakar, said: 'We didn't expect this at all. This decision is unjust. Personally, I find it ridiculous. I think it doesn't give a very good image of African football.' The mood in Senegal has shifted from euphoria to fury, with many questioning the integrity of CAF.

Former France international Patrice Evra, born in Dakar, said: 'I thought it was an April fool's joke. The real champions are Senegal and they always will be.' Domino's Pizza UK also weighed in on social media, posting: 'Just had Morocco come in and collect Senegal's order.'

Senegal has confirmed it will appeal the 'unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision' at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. The Senegalese Football Federation stated: 'This unprecedented and exceptionally serious decision directly contradicts the fundamental principles of sporting ethics, foremost among which are fairness, loyalty and respect for the truth of the game.'

Speculation about corruption has been rife, with Pape Ousmane Ba, a 32-year-old entrepreneur, saying: 'It's corruption ... when you've already 'eaten,' you have to deliver to satisfy the one who gave you the money. I think African football is very corrupt and this scandal shows it in a flagrant light.'

Despite the setback, Senegalese fans remain hopeful that the trophy will be returned. Ba added: 'We won with dignity, we celebrated with dignity ... this is sick. Football is won on the pitch. That is where we beat them. Out there, 11 against 11.'
