Ruben Amorim has been told he would have been a 'perfect fit' for Chelsea as his Manchester United career continues to falter. The Portuguese manager replaced Erik ten Hag partway through last season but has won only 17 of his 47 competitive matches, with just eight of those victories in the Premier League.
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Arsenal star Paul Merson argued that Amorim's tactical system, which relies on three at the back and high wing-backs, would suit Chelsea's squad better. 'He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea. They've got world class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto. They've got the best holding midfield player in the league in Moises Caicedo. It would fit the players,' Merson said.
Merson was critical of Manchester United's current squad for the same system. 'You look at Man Utd and this system does not suit the squad they've got at all. The two wing-backs are nowhere near good enough. And they are a big part of this formation working. No legs in midfield. Everything is up against him,' he added.
Despite the poor form, Amorim retains the backing of the United hierarchy for now, though that could change if results do not improve. When asked about his position after a defeat to Manchester City, Amorim said: 'I understand that and I accept. It is not a record you should have in Manchester United... I am not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.'
Amorim insisted he would continue to give everything for the club but acknowledged that the decision on his future is not his. 'My message is that I am going to give everything. I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. It is not my decision, the rest. Until I am here, I will do my best.'
