Former Scotland skipper Gary McAllister believes Scott McTominay is ready to make his mark on the World Cup stage after taking Serie A by storm. McAllister still cannot fathom why Manchester United allowed the midfielder to join Napoli two years ago.
McTominay's Rise in Italy
Since moving to Napoli, McTominay has won the Serie A title and the league's footballer of the year award in his first season, followed by the Supercoppa Italia last year. He scored his 16th international goal in Scotland's 4-0 win over Bolivia on Saturday, setting the stage for his first World Cup appearance.
McAllister's Praise
McAllister said: "I never quite understood why Manchester United let him go. He came through the ranks and always gave his best. I don't think anybody thought he would take over Serie A like he has. Napoli can see he works hard for the club."
McAllister also highlighted the strength of Scotland's midfield, including Lewis Ferguson and John McGinn. He noted that Ferguson is linked with top Serie A clubs, and McGinn's leadership at Aston Villa impressed him.
Scotland's World Cup Prospects
McAllister believes Scotland can make history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time. With matches against Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil, he said: "Playing the weakest team first is important. If we get three points against Haiti, we can compete with Morocco. The ideal scenario is going into the Brazil game already qualified."
