Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna insists they are working hard to tie Scott McTominay down to a new contract. The midfielder has been ruled out of the first four games of Scotland's Nations League campaign as he prepares to undergo surgery for a minor heart problem. He is under contract in Naples until the summer of 2028 but has recently hinted that he is yet to decide if he will extend his stay with the club beyond then.
Manna is hopeful they can come to an agreement with the 29-year-old, who has scored 27 goals in 82 appearances for I Partenopei.
Contract renewal talks
Speaking to DAZN before Napoli's 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan on Saturday, Manna said: "McTominay's contract renewal? Scott said he doesn't know if he'll renew at this time. He has a two-year contract, we want to do it, and he wants to do it too. It's not always easy to make things coincide, but we're trying."
He also provided an update on McTominay's expected return to action, with the former Manchester United man set to go under the knife on Monday.
Recovery timeline
"It will take 28 days for him to be fit for action," Manna added. "The player will rest for two weeks and then resume competitive activity without contact. This is the recovery time, and then he may be lagging behind in his fitness or have complications, but we'll see about that as we go along. We chose this time for the surgery because of the break, and we're aiming to have him back in October, when there will be nine matches."
Speaking at the Italian Footballers' Association Gala at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan earlier this week, McTominay remained relaxed about the lay-off.
He said: "How am I now? I'm fine. The heart issue isn't a problem. I'll get everything sorted out and be back soon. Will I be back after the international break? I don't know, we'll see. The procedure was something I'd planned to do with the club for quite a while. We'd already talked about it in pre-season. I'll be out for a few weeks."
