Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will sit out the FedEx St. Jude Championship, scheduled to begin on August 13 in Tennessee, admitting that his motivation for PGA Tour events has diminished. The Northern Irishman, who won the Masters earlier this year, finished outside contention at The Open at Royal Birkdale, where Ryan Fox claimed his first major title.
McIlroy Prioritises Other Commitments
McIlroy, a four-time major winner, stated that his scaled-back schedule is a deliberate choice. "I think it just sort of ebbs and flows," he said. "There's been years where I've given it maybe more of my attention and years that I haven't. Yeah, I guess I'm just at a stage that I have other things that I prioritise."
He also pointed to the uncertainty surrounding the PGA Tour's schedule and structure. "The PGA Tour is in a lot of flux at the minute with a lot of their schedule and structure and everything like that. So I think the change where it doesn't matter where you are in the top 30 going into the Tour Championship, it's like I just need to be in the top 30 going in there to have a chance to win a FedExCup. So why would I care about the first two? I sort of came to that decision last year, and I'm just sort of doing the same thing."
Fitzpatrick Steps Away After Disappointing Weekend
Alex Fitzpatrick, the 27-year-old English golfer, has decided to take a break after a disappointing end to his Open campaign. Fitzpatrick was in contention at the halfway stage but shot rounds of 73 and 77 on the weekend, tumbling down the leaderboard.
"It was c***. No two ways about it. My putting was woeful," Fitzpatrick said. He also criticised the pin placements on Sunday: "I thought some of the pins yesterday were terrible, just brutally honest. And, yeah, mixed with me not playing very good at all, that's what it is."
Fitzpatrick confirmed he will step away from the game for two weeks. "No, I'm having two weeks off. I'm putting the clubs away and having a good reset and actually enjoy my life."
Fox Wins First Major at Royal Birkdale
Ryan Fox of New Zealand won the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, finishing one stroke ahead of Cameron Young. The victory marked the first major win for Fox and the first major of the year for a golfer from the southern hemisphere, following European wins at the Masters and PGA Championship and American Wyndham Clark's US Open triumph.
