Steve McClaren is seriously contemplating a return to English football after receiving a surprise job offer from Rotherham United, who have just been relegated to League Two. The former England manager has been out of work since resigning as Jamaica coach in November following their failure to secure automatic World Cup qualification.
McClaren's Career and Potential Move
The 64-year-old has not held a role in England since serving as assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. However, he boasts extensive Football League experience, having managed Derby County, Nottingham Forest, and notably Middlesbrough, where his success earned him the England job. McClaren is attracted by the opportunity to work for the Yorkshire club as their new director of football, according to the BBC. No agreement has been reached yet, but the ex-England boss is seriously weighing the challenge.
Rotherham's Current Situation
Rotherham will spend next season in League Two after a second relegation in three seasons. The club has yo-yoed between the Championship and League One for nearly a decade, with four promotions and four relegations since 2014. Their underwhelming League One campaign has dropped them to the fourth tier for the first time since 2013. The Millers underwent a managerial change this season, with Matt Hamshaw replaced by Lee Clark in March. Clark's future remains uncertain, as National League side Hartlepool United reportedly eye him as their next manager.
McClaren's managerial career has been mixed. His ill-fated spell as England boss ended after failing to qualify for Euro 2008, but he later won an unlikely Dutch title with FC Twente, beating Ajax and PSV, which led to a job at Wolfsburg. He has also managed Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers. Now, he is keen to get back involved in football, and Rotherham could offer that opportunity.
