McAvennie apologises for Trusty 'woke' comment

Celtic legend Frank McAvennie has apologised after facing a backlash over his comments about Auston Trusty being allowed time away from the club following the death of his father.

The US international lost his dad in the lead-up to Celtic's Europa League clash with Celta Vigo last month and has not played since the 4-1 defeat to Benfica on October 15.

Trusty was permitted to return to the United States over the weekend to attend his father's funeral while Celtic lost 2-0 away to Falkirk.

McAvennie's Apology

McAvennie initially described the decision to grant the player leave as 'woke', but has now issued a statement offering a profound apology.

Writing on the Let Me Be Frank podcast's X account, he said: "Hi everyone. I’ve seen some of the reaction to comments I made on the podcast about Auston’s absence from football following the death of his father.

"I can understand why people feel my comments were insensitive, and looking back, I should have chosen my words more carefully.

"Everyone deals with grief differently, and I certainly meant no disrespect to Auston or his family. Celtic need the big man back, and that’s what I was clumsily trying to say.

"I wish him and his family all the very best."

Fan Reaction

Celtic supporters did not take kindly to McAvennie's original remarks, with one social media user commenting: "We know what you meant @MaccaFrank. Imagine us 'woke brigade' wanting a little time to grieve. You're only sorry because you've been caught."

Another added: "Aww away geese peace ur only apologising because ppl have been giving you pelters."
