Kylian Mbappe scored the 400th goal of his career as France secured a 4-0 victory over Ukraine on Thursday night, booking their place at next summer's FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The France captain opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 55th minute with a panenka, after Michael Olise had been brought down in the box. The decision stood following a VAR review, with referee Slavko Vincic sticking to his original call after Ukraine had earlier appealed for a spot-kick.
Olise doubled the lead in the 76th minute before Mbappe netted his second of the night from close range, bringing up his 400th career goal at the age of 26 years and 328 days. His tally includes 55 goals for the national team, leaving him just two shy of Olivier Giroud's all-time scoring record for France.
In the 88th minute, Mbappe unselfishly squared the ball to Hugo Ekitike, who fired home his first international goal with a fine effort. The result left France top of their qualifying group with a game to spare, while Iceland and Ukraine battle for the play-off spot.
Before kick-off at the Parc des Princes, a minute's silence was held to mark the tenth anniversary of the Paris terror attacks, which claimed 132 lives on 13 November 2015. Mbappe downplayed his milestone, telling TF1: 'My 400 career goals? That doesn't impress people. It's just symbolic, but I'm going to try for the impossible.'
