Didier Deschamps has stated that Kylian Mbappe is fully fit for France's World Cup semi-final clash with Spain, dismissing reports in France that the striker is still struggling with an ankle injury. The Real Madrid forward has been instrumental for Les Bleus, contributing to 11 of France's 16 goals in the tournament, either scoring or assisting. Concerns arose when Mbappe was substituted late in the last-16 victory over Morocco after a heavy tackle, but he described himself as "completely fine" in a post-match interview.
Training Concerns and Deschamps' Assurance
Despite Mbappe's own reassurances, reports in France claim he is still experiencing pain in his right ankle, which led to him training separately on Monday. He is reportedly prepared to play through the pain, with his place in the starting lineup secure. Deschamps, however, was emphatic in his pre-match press conference: "Kylian is doing well. He is at 100 per cent. We can’t go beyond 100. He is at 100 per cent."
Midfield Issues for France
Deschamps also addressed midfield concerns, revealing that Aurelien Tchouameni is not yet fully fit after a thigh injury sustained in the last-32 win over Sweden. Tchouameni returned to training this week but is unlikely to face Spain. Manu Kone is the top choice to deputise, but he is carrying a knock from the Morocco match, where he was withdrawn with a knee issue.
France's Form and Deschamps' View on Spain
France have been dominant in the World Cup, with their attack proving relentless. Despite this, Deschamps labelled Spain as favourites for the semi-final, which takes place on Bastille Day. "Not to put pressure on Spain or their coach, but they are the favourites," he said. "Apart from the game against Cape Verde, they have shown that they are a great team and what they are capable of."
