A football match was suspended after a defender collapsed on the pitch, with the linesman credited with saving his life. Valerio Giordani collapsed after a challenge with opposing striker Alessio Bartolotta during Trastevere and Anzio's Serie D clash over the weekend.
Giordani lost consciousness in the fall, leading to linesman Roberto Cusimano intervening. Cusimano, an anesthetist by trade, took charge of the situation and helped stabilise the defender until an ambulance arrived.
Hospitalisation and diagnosis
Giordani regained consciousness and was transferred to San Camillo Hospital for further tests, where local reports suggest his CT scan was negative. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Giordani has suffered several facial fractures, including a serious one on his eye socket, which reportedly led to his eye falling out.
In a statement, Trastevere said: "We announce that Valerio Giordani, who was injured during today's match, is hospitalized at San Camillo Hospital. He has suffered several facial fractures and is in stable condition."
Club and officials praise linesman
The club also extended thanks to assistant referee Roberto Cusimano, from the Palermo section, stating: "In a moment of great tension, his promptness played a crucial role in preventing more serious consequences. The entire Trastevere Calcio club extends its heartfelt condolences to Valerio, wishing him a speedy recovery."
AIA president Francesco Massini and the AIA National Committee shared a statement hailing Cusimano's actions, saying: "It is a source of pride to see how our referees stand out not only for their commitment on the playing field but also for the spirit of altruism and generosity that has always distinguished them."
The referee, after speaking with both captains, decided to postpone the match. Doctors will evaluate the next steps in the coming hours.
