Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has opened up about the tense period when Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford, admitting his family urged him to leave the club immediately.
The Spanish playmaker, who had previously worked under Mourinho at Chelsea, feared history would repeat itself after their strained relationship at Stamford Bridge.
Family Concerns Over Mourinho Reunion
Mata revealed his closest relatives were particularly worried about the managerial change in 2016, knowing how his Chelsea career had ended under the Portuguese tactician.
"When Mourinho signed for United, my family told me: 'You have to leave now,'" Mata confessed. "They remembered what happened at Chelsea and didn't want me to go through that again."
From Chelsea Outcast to United Stay
Despite the warnings, Mata decided to stay and prove himself, eventually winning Mourinho's trust at United. The midfielder went on to make over 150 appearances under Mourinho, winning the Europa League and League Cup.
"In the end, it worked out differently than at Chelsea," Mata reflected. "I think we both matured and learned from our past experience."
