England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he has not spoken to Mason Greenwood and does not consider the Marseille forward for selection. The 23-year-old, who has one senior England cap, is in the process of switching his international allegiance to Jamaica but has yet to complete the paperwork.
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and assault. The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe before moving permanently to Marseille, where he scored 21 Ligue 1 goals last season.
Tuchel stated: 'I have not spoken to him until now. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team.'
Jamaica manager Steve McClaren expressed disappointment that Greenwood has not committed to the Caribbean nation despite obtaining a passport. 'He’s not going to commit at this time to anybody,' McClaren said, adding that Greenwood wants to focus on club football. The forward's only England appearance came in September 2020 against Iceland.
