Marseille's Season Unravels After De Zerbi Exit as Greenwood Criticised
Marseille's Season Unravels After De Zerbi Exit

Marseille's Tumultuous Season Descends into Disarray

The city of Marseille and chaos have long been synonymous, and this season has proven no exception for the passionate supporters of Olympique de Marseille. The club's campaign has taken a dramatic and negative turn following the explosive exit of manager Roberto De Zerbi in February, an event that now appears to have been the catalyst for a complete unravelling of their fortunes.

De Zerbi's Departure Leaves a Void

Roberto De Zerbi's departure, which at the time seemed contentious, is now viewed with significant regret. The Italian manager, who has since taken the helm at Tottenham Hotspur, was evidently not the source of Marseille's problems. In fact, evidence suggests he was the crucial stabilizing force holding the entire operation together. Since his abrupt exit, the season has spiralled into disarray, with performances and morale plummeting alarmingly.

Beye's Disastrous Start and Shifting Tactics

Habib Beye was appointed as De Zerbi's successor, but his tenure has begun disastrously. Under his leadership, Marseille have lost five of their first nine matches. In a bid to lift spirits and foster team unity, Beye took the squad to Marbella for a training camp. However, this initiative failed to yield positive results, as it was immediately followed by a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Lorient.

According to reports from L'Equipe, Beye's initially relaxed managerial approach has undergone a sharp reversal. Players are now being subjected to rigorous double training sessions in a desperate attempt to reverse the team's poor form and salvage their Champions League ambitions.

Greenwood's Attitude Under Scrutiny

Mason Greenwood has been Marseille's standout performer this season on paper, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in Ligue 1. Despite these impressive statistics, the former Manchester United striker is facing intense criticism. RMC Sport reports that Greenwood is "irritating coaches with his nonchalance," with accusations that he "gave up" during the recent match and is showing "very little effort or connection with his teammates."

His perceived lack of application has led to speculation that he could be sold in the summer transfer window, with the club potentially looking to capitalise on his still relatively high market value.

Senior Players Failing to Deliver

The issues extend far beyond Greenwood. Club captain and former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been described as "unrecognisable," appearing hesitant in his play and consistently outmatched in physical duels. His future at the club is now in doubt.

Other experienced figures are also underperforming. Benjamin Pavard, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, has been accused of disappearing in crucial moments. Veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly "disgusted" by the perceived lack of effort from his teammates. Defensively, Leonardo Balerdi has been error-prone, directly contributing to both goals in the recent defeat with poor performances.

Structural Instability from Top to Bottom

The problems at Marseille are deeply rooted. The club has not won a major trophy since the League Cup fourteen years ago, and their last Ligue 1 title was in 2010. New president Stephane Richard has pointed to the enormous annual player turnover as a primary cause for inconsistent performances, stating it is "incredibly difficult to get a team playing well when a third or half of the squad changes every year."

Instability permeates the entire organisation. Sporting director Medhi Benatia resigned in February following De Zerbi's exit, only to remarkably reverse his decision and return. He publicly vented his fury after the weekend's loss, labelling the performance "scandalous" and demanding "a minimum of pride" and "respect for the jersey" from the players.

Internal Discord and a Glimmer of Hope

An anonymous staff member told RMC that some players are struggling with Beye's methods, but suggested the issue is broader, with certain squad members seeming "disconnected from reality and the Champions League objective." There are reports of players failing to comprehend the new manager's tactical instructions, placing Beye under immense pressure.

Despite the pervasive negativity, a mathematical chance for redemption remains. Marseille are currently just two points behind Lyon in third place, with the top of the Ligue 1 table remaining highly congested. A strong finish to the season could theoretically salvage their campaign and secure a Champions League spot.

However, given the current atmosphere of disillusionment among the fanbase and the evident discord within the squad, achieving such a turnaround appears to be a distant and unlikely prospect for a club mired in crisis.
