Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has proposed a swap deal that would see Marcus Rashford move to AC Milan, with Rafael Leao heading to Old Trafford. The £131 million-rated Portuguese forward could be the key to resolving Rashford's uncertain future.
Rashford's Loan Spell at Barcelona
Marcus Rashford has spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, including a crucial strike in the title-clinching win over Real Madrid. Barcelona have an option to buy him for around £26 million but have not yet triggered it, leaving the England international's future uncertain.
Stam's Swap Proposal
Speaking to ComeOn, Stam suggested a swap deal between Rashford and Leao. "Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work," he said. "Leao is also a good player. He has shown his potential at Milan. I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Man Utd."
Stam emphasized the importance of considering more than just skill. "You need to have a look not only at the skill of a player, but also at the mentality of players. You need to consider the situation where the club is, what player they are bringing in that is going to help the club going forward, so that you don't get any irritations from players who are not being picked to start."
Leao's Situation at AC Milan
Rafael Leao, 26, has been at AC Milan for seven years and has a £131 million release clause, though he could be available for less. This season, he has scored nine Serie A goals and been used across the front line. However, Milan are struggling for form, having won just one of their last six league games and sitting fourth, just two points clear of sixth-placed Como, with Champions League qualification at risk.
What's Next for Rashford?
Rashford could still return to Manchester United if Barcelona decide not to make his loan permanent. Stam's proposal adds another potential destination, with AC Milan offering a new challenge. The swap deal would give United a different attacking option in Leao, while Rashford would bring his experience to Serie A.
With the summer transfer window approaching, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining where both players will be playing next season.
