Marcus Rashford has moved to clarify a social media post that sparked accusations of a 'dig' towards Manchester United. The 28-year-old, currently on loan at Barcelona, celebrated his England call-up for the World Cup by thanking several clubs and coaches on Instagram, but omitted any mention of United.
Rashford wrote: "Special thanks to Unai (Emery), Hansi (Flick), Thomas, Aston Villa, Barcelona & England for believing in me when things got tough." Fans quickly criticised the omission, with some accusing him of disrespect towards his boyhood club, which still holds his contract until 2028.
Rashford responded on X, stating: "To make my IG story clear. It's not a dig of any sort! I'm a MU supporter, and that remains. I was showing gratitude to the clubs and coaches that I have worked with over the past 18 months, they have played a big role in this England call up."
Despite his good form at Barcelona, the La Liga champions have not indicated they will pay the £26m needed to sign him permanently. Rashford has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 appearances, helping Barca win two trophies. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has floated the idea of extending the loan, but United want a permanent transfer.
