Manchester United academy defender Rhys Bennett has spoken publicly for the first time about the devastating impact of his father's death, vowing to use the tragedy as motivation in his football career.
A Tragic Loss and a Son's Heartache
In a raw and emotional interview with BBC Sport, the 22-year-old centre-back opened up about the death of his father, David, who took his own life in October. Bennett described being left 'broken' and 'devastated' by the loss, which led Manchester United to grant him compassionate leave.
He expressed the profound sadness that his father will not witness the progression of his career. 'The things I achieve in life will be bittersweet because he's never going to be there to see it,' Bennett said. 'But it still spurs you on. It gives you that fire in your belly that I'm going to do this for him, my family and myself.'
Finding Purpose in Pain
Bennett revealed that his father's struggle had become overwhelming, but emphasised that David's sole wish was for his son to succeed. 'As much as what has happened is terrible, Dad wouldn't want that to derail my career or change my outlook on life,' he stated.
He explained how the experience has reshaped his perspective. 'It gives you a different perspective and gives you a purpose,' Bennett shared, adding that he feels his father's spiritual presence during both good and bad days.
Understanding the platform his interview provides, Bennett issued a crucial plea to others who might be struggling with similar thoughts as his father. He urged them to 'just reach out' for support, highlighting the importance of seeking help.
A Promising Career on Hold
Bennett, who captained United's FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2022 alongside stars like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, is currently sidelined with a knee injury. He is aiming for a loan move to a League One club in January to gain more senior experience.
His career trajectory so far includes:
- Scoring in the 2022 FA Youth Cup final at Old Trafford.
- A loan spell at Fleetwood Town last season, making 19 appearances.
- Being an unused substitute for the senior team in a Premier League match against West Ham in December 2023.
- Featuring in pre-season for Erik ten Hag's first team in the United States during summer 2024.
David Bennett was a vocal and proud supporter of his son's achievements, regularly celebrating Rhys's successes on social media. The young defender now carries that memory as his primary inspiration, determined to make his father proud through his future accomplishments on the pitch.
