Manchester United are reportedly looking to the past as they search for a new manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim after a disappointing 14-month tenure. The club is expected to appoint an interim manager rather than a permanent replacement immediately, with several former players emerging as contenders.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who previously managed the club on an interim basis before being appointed permanently, is understood to be a frontrunner after early discussions. Other names linked include current caretaker Darren Fletcher, former midfielder Michael Carrick, and ex-striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who enjoyed a brief but successful spell last season.
The club has a history of turning to former players in such roles. After David Moyes was sacked in 2014, Ryan Giggs took over and secured wins against Norwich and Hull. More recently, Solskjaer’s interim spell in 2018-19 yielded 14 wins from 19 matches, including a memorable Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
Michael Carrick also served as caretaker after Solskjaer’s departure, overseeing a draw with Chelsea and a win over Arsenal. Ruud van Nistelrooy, after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, led United to three wins and a draw in four games, including a 5-2 Carabao Cup triumph against Leicester.
United now face a decision on who will steer the team through the remainder of the season, with the interim manager likely to be given a chance to impress for a permanent role.
