JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old Manchester United prodigy, is on course to shatter a club record that has stood for nearly 70 years, despite being blocked from Premier League action this season due to age regulations.
The teenager, hailed as one of the finest talents from the United academy in recent times, would become the youngest player ever to represent the senior side if he makes his debut. The current record is held by David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he played in the 1956 FA Charity Shield.
Premier League rules require players to have turned 15 by August 31 of the season. Gabriel, who celebrated his 15th birthday in October, is therefore ineligible this term. However, next season presents a brief eight-week window before he turns 16, allowing him to potentially surpass Gaskell's mark.
Gabriel has impressed for the under-18s, scoring 15 goals in 20 appearances, including a goal in a recent derby win over Manchester City. Interim manager Michael Carrick, whose son also plays in the academy, has watched him closely.
To make history, Gabriel must maintain his form, avoid injury, and earn a first-team call-up. He aims to follow in the footsteps of Arsenal's Max Dowman, but luck will play a crucial role in his quest to become United's youngest ever senior player.
