Manchester United believe there is no evidence linking Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho to the controversial video involving Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez. The clip, broadcast live on the Argentina team bus after their Copa America victory, captured Fernandez and others singing a racist and transphobic chant aimed at France.
FIFA and Chelsea have launched disciplinary proceedings into the incident. Fernandez has since apologised, stating the video does not 'reflect my beliefs or my character'. Chelsea released a statement welcoming the apology and confirming an internal disciplinary process.
United stars Martinez and Garnacho were part of the Argentina squad but were not seen in the clip. The Manchester Evening News reports that a United source said there is no evidence of either player being involved in the singing. The club has distanced itself from the footage.
The chant was first sung by Argentina supporters during the 2022 World Cup. Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana described the video as 'uninhibited racism', and the French Football Federation plans to file a legal complaint.
