Manchester United could address their defensive problems in the January transfer window by signing Lewis Hall and Jarrad Branthwaite, while offloading several players including Lisandro Martinez, according to reports.
Pressure mounts on Carrick after poor start
United's hopes that last season's third-place finish under Michael Carrick marked a new beginning after 13 years of disappointment have faded just two months into the campaign. A poor run of results has left the club in the bottom half of the Premier League table and struggling in the Champions League, with Carrick under significant pressure despite being appointed permanently only in the summer.
Internal tensions are rising, with players openly criticising senior figures. Captain Bruno Fernandes questioned Carrick's approach after a heavy defeat at Como, just a week after Lisandro Martinez criticised the club's recruitment during the summer.
Left-back and centre-back issues
The club began the season with 31-year-old Luke Shaw as their only senior specialist left-back, a decision that has proved costly. Director of football Jason Wilcox is reportedly exploring ways to strengthen the position, with long-standing target Lewis Hall remaining a key option. Newcastle previously informed United that Hall was unavailable, but the 22-year-old England international is said to be keen on a move to Manchester.
Hall could join Branthwaite at United, with the club considering a renewed approach for the Everton defender after having two offers worth up to £50million rejected in 2024. Branthwaite, 24, is left-footed and has Premier League experience, and his performances this season earned him selection in the latest international squad.
Planned departures
United are reportedly considering selling Martinez, who was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer. The 28-year-old prefers a transfer to La Liga, and United could activate a 12-month extension on his contract to demand a transfer fee.
Shaw could remain at Old Trafford until the end of the season for squad depth before being sold in the summer, given his injury record and 12 months remaining on his deal. Harry Maguire, despite being 33, is expected to stay and mentor younger defenders such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, with the club poised to activate the additional-year clause in his contract.
United's dream defence from January would be Diogo Dalot, Yoro, Branthwaite, and Hall.
