Manchester United have decided not to trigger a one-year extension in Casemiro's contract, allowing the Brazilian midfielder to leave when his deal expires in the summer. The move is part of a squad overhaul aimed at refreshing the midfield with younger players for the long term.
Casemiro, who earns approximately £430,000 per week, will free up significant funds for new signings. His departure is expected to save the club around £156m in wages and fees over the remaining contract period. United have identified Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton as potential replacements.
The 34-year-old joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 for £70m and has made 146 appearances, scoring 21 goals. He won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford. Casemiro expressed his gratitude, saying, 'I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.' He plans to continue playing after the World Cup, with interest from MLS, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.
In other news, Chelsea are considering a loan move for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, currently on loan at Nottingham Forest. The 27-year-old Brazilian could provide cover in midfield as Chelsea compete on four fronts. Forest have an obligation to buy if Luiz makes a certain number of appearances, but Chelsea are exploring a deal.
Chelsea are also in the market for a defender, targeting Rennes' Jérémy Jacquet, but have yet to agree a fee. Rennes are demanding around £60m for the 20-year-old.
