Maya Le Tissier's first-half penalty secured Manchester United Women a 1-0 victory over Vålerenga in their debut Women's Champions League league phase match at Leigh Sports Village. The win, though low-key, marked a historic first three points for the club in the competition.
Le Tissier, who had spoken of her childhood dream to play in the Champions League, calmly converted the spot kick after Arna Eiríksdóttir was penalised for handball. United manager Marc Skinner praised his captain's composure, calling it fitting that she scored the club's first goal in the main draw.
United dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances after the break. Jess Park missed a one-on-one opportunity early in the second half, while Vålerenga almost equalised through Elise Thorsnes, who dragged a shot wide. The visitors defended resolutely, limiting United's clear-cut chances.
Skinner acknowledged the importance of the win, noting that nine to 12 points from six group games should be enough to secure a top-four finish and automatic quarter-final qualification. United next face Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford in November.
