Manchester United's under-21 National League Cup match against Tamworth was abandoned on Wednesday night due to an injury sustained by midfielder Sékou Koné. The game at the Lamb Ground was suspended after Koné went down following a clash of heads while defending a corner.
The 19-year-old Mali youth international received treatment on the pitch for approximately 15 minutes before being carried off on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask. The match was abandoned with the score at 0-0 after half-time had been called. A replacement ambulance was required, causing a delay that forced the fixture to be abandoned.
Manchester United released a statement confirming: 'We can confirm Sékou is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team. He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks.'
Tamworth also issued a statement on their official X account, saying: 'Due to the medical situation, we are forced to abandon tonight’s fixture, details will be revealed in due course. We would like to wish safe travels to all the Man United fans, staff and players. We especially wish Sékou Koné a speedy recovery.'
