Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo missed Manchester United training on Monday morning ahead of the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. A decision will be made later in the day on whether they travel to the Spanish capital in what is a huge game for United and head coach Michael Carrick.
Injuries and absentees
Also missing from Monday's session were Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui. Sesko and Dorgu missed out as they recover from their respective injuries. Sesko is suffering from a shin issue, and Carrick, speaking last week, confirmed he is uncertain how long he will be sidelined for.
The striker missed the last three games of last season and all of pre-season due to a shin injury, but Carrick said of his current problem: "It's a similar area, but it's not the exact same thing again. And we're still working through it a little bit to see how long the issue will be. We're hoping it will be soon, obviously, but at this moment it's still not quite clear."
Dorgu pulled out of international duty with Denmark after picking up a suspected hamstring injury against Wales, and he is expected to be out for a few weeks. Mazraoui withdrew from international duty with Morocco last month after picking up a knock against Lesotho. Carrick suggested a late decision would be made on his involvement against Tottenham, but he was not fit enough to make the squad and now looks set to miss the game against Atletico.
De Ligt comeback and squad list
Matthijs de Ligt took part in training as he continues his comeback from injury, but it is unclear whether he will travel with the squad today. The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford with the squad to face Tottenham last weekend but was not named on the bench, as was the case against Fulham. United are carefully handling De Ligt as he reaches the final stage of recovery from back surgery.
Atletico are second in La Liga and head into the United clash having won four straight games, including a victory against their rivals Real Madrid.
