Manchester United Goalkeeper Slams Everton's Aggressive Tactics
Manchester United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton on Monday night, but the match was marred by controversy as United goalkeeper Senne Lammens criticised the home side's physical approach, describing it as 'a bit over the top'.
A Battle of Set Pieces and Physicality
The match at Hill Dickinson Stadium saw Everton employ a direct, physical strategy, particularly from set pieces, which put significant pressure on Lammens throughout the game. Despite this, United managed to repel the onslaught and claim all three points thanks to Benjamin Sesko's 71st-minute counter-attacking goal.
'Everton are a physical team, their defenders are really big,' Lammens told Sky Sports after the match. 'We knew the corners and set pieces would be difficult. It's a strength of mine dealing with crosses, but today it was a bit over the top! I had to be behind the line in order to come out. It was too much, but it can be difficult for the referee to see it.'
Lammens' Standout Performance
Despite the challenging conditions, Lammens delivered an exceptional performance that earned him the player of the match award. The Belgian goalkeeper made several crucial saves, including a stunning stop from Michael Keane's long-range effort, but it was his commanding presence in dealing with crosses that proved most valuable.
'Sometimes you can't be thinking too much about players around you, because then you aren't thinking about the ball,' Lammens explained. 'My defenders can create space for me, so I have opportunity to come and punch the ball away. But it is getting more and more difficult.'
United's Defensive Resilience
The victory marked Manchester United's third clean sheet under interim manager Michael Carrick and extended their unbeaten run to six matches since his appointment. The team has now won five and drawn one of those games, moving them back into fourth place in the Premier League table.
'Today was about the hard work, defending together,' Lammens added. 'We know we didn't do our best, especially first half, it was difficult. We have to be better on the ball but if we defend well, don't give balls away then we have the players up top to make the difference.'
Carrick's Praise for His Goalkeeper
Interim manager Michael Carrick was effusive in his praise for Lammens after the match, highlighting the goalkeeper's composure under intense pressure.
'I thought he was outstanding tonight,' Carrick said. 'I think as a goalkeeper, really, you couldn’t expect, you couldn’t hope for much more. Safe hands, calm, composed, came and punched when you needed to and calmed things down. I thought it was an exemplary performance.'
Carrick specifically noted the challenging final period of the match: 'Listen, that was a tough place. That last 15 minutes, the amount of crosses and corners and things that you had to deal with and a couple of shots that he just catches and takes the sting out of it. So to be able to do that in such a manner was obviously pleasing for us.'
Sesko Continues Impressive Form
While Lammens' performance stole much of the attention, Benjamin Sesko's match-winning goal continued his impressive scoring run. The striker's side-footed finish on the break marked his sixth goal in his last seven appearances, demonstrating his growing importance to the team.
The £18.2 million signing from Royal Antwerp has provided stability in goal that had been lacking during Andre Onana's tenure, with his assured handling and command of the penalty area proving crucial in tight matches like this one.
As Manchester United continue their push for Champions League qualification under Carrick's leadership, performances like this one demonstrate the defensive resilience that will be crucial in the season's final months.
