Manchester United's squad remain fully supportive of head coach Michael Carrick despite a poor start to the season, according to reports. The club have won only two of their seven matches so far, suffering three defeats, including a third-round Carabao Cup exit.
Board backs Carrick
The Red Devils' board are also fully behind Carrick. So much so, they made the decision not to make contact with any potential replacements for the former midfielder over the current international break. That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who says the club are confident the 45-year-old can improve the team's form with time.
United sit 12th in the Premier League table on five points, 10 less than leaders Manchester City. The number of losses this season is more than Carrick suffered during his 17-game interim spell last season.
Positive signs
Carrick has not yet been able to make use of Carlos Baleba's talents. The Cameroonian midfielder, signed in the summer for up to £70million, was an unused substitute on his return from injury against Fulham before the international break.
Matheus Cunha scored an 89th-minute goal to help alleviate some pressure on Carrick at Craven Cottage. The manager said after: "We finished on a positive, which is a small step for us … without getting carried away it's a good step. We came to take three points but at least we've taken something to build on moving forward."
"It has been pretty fine margins [so far this season] that have flipped it [the wrong way]. I know we can do better, we need to do better at certain things. But I'm not despondent and down because we're showing some good signs."
Next test
Carrick will need to improve United's results but the fact he retains the backing of both the hierarchy and his players is crucial going into their Old Trafford clash with winless Tottenham on October 10.
