Manchester United have ruled out making any new signings in the January transfer window, according to manager Ruben Amorim. The decision comes amid reports that teenage left-back Harry Amass, currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, is considering a move to Stoke City for the remainder of the season.
Amass, 18, joined United from Watford in 2023 and made his first-team debut under Amorim in March. He featured in five Premier League matches last season and two in the Europa League, but was loaned to Wednesday for regular game time. The defender recently responded to Amorim's comments that he was 'struggling' by sharing a player of the month award on social media, later deleting the post after it was clarified the remark referred to Wednesday's league position.
Amorim defended his comments, stating: 'I think is the feeling of entitlement that we have in our club. Sometimes strong words is not bad words, sometimes difficult moments is not the bad things for the kids.' He added: 'I didn't say anything wrong. I just spoke about how the luck of playing for Manchester United. Sometimes you play for Manchester United and you go see different realities and you understand that you are really lucky to be in Manchester United.'
Wednesday have been deducted 18 points for entering administration and further points for breaches under former owner Dejphon Chansiri, leaving them 32 points adrift of safety. Despite this, Amass has impressed and attracted interest from numerous clubs, with Stoke City reportedly leading the race. United will not recall the defender, but Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen remains hopeful of retaining him, saying: 'There is a dialogue between the clubs and the agent, so I really hope that we can finalise something soon. Of course, we would love to keep him.'
Should Amass join Stoke, he would link up with a side pushing for promotion from the Championship, currently ninth and three points off the play-off places. Stoke have the league's strongest defence, having conceded only 23 goals this season.
