Manchester United's need for a traditional holding midfielder was laid bare in their narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves, where Ruben Neves impressed for the hosts. However, the Red Devils' chances of signing the Portuguese international appear to be fading as the transfer window nears its close.
According to reports, Wolves are not anticipating Neves' departure, though a substantial bid from United could potentially change that. With less than 12 hours until the deadline, finding a suitable replacement would be difficult, meaning any deal would likely require a mammoth fee.
Meanwhile, Wolves are pursuing a loan move for Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, who impressed at Euro 2020. The 24-year-old has previous Premier League experience with Swansea City, though his spell there was disappointing. Should Neves leave, Sanches would provide a capable stand-in for the season.
United's current midfield options, including Fred, have been criticised for failing to provide adequate protection to the defence. Neves, with his composure and passing range, would have been an ideal addition, but the club may have to look elsewhere.
