Manchester United supporters held a protest against the club's hierarchy before the Champions League match against AS Roma at Old Trafford, displaying 4,000 green and yellow balloons in the Stretford End.
The demonstration, organised by a group called the Stretford Enders, was designed to accompany the flags in that end of the ground when the Champions League anthem was played ahead of kick-off. The green and gold colours reflect the kit originally worn by Newton Heath, the team that later became Manchester United, and have been used as a symbol of protest against the Glazer family since demonstrations in 2010.
Protest targets Glazers and Ratcliffe
The protest was aimed at both the Glazer family and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The Glazers have faced intense scrutiny since their controversial arrival at the club, and recent performances have led to renewed criticism, with Ratcliffe also becoming a target for supporters.
United currently sit 17th in the Premier League, and match-going fans have continued to back manager Michael Carrick while highlighting what they see as structural issues stemming from the club's hierarchy.
Further actions planned
It has been claimed that further actions are planned, which could include additional disruption. During the recent defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, fans sang songs targeting the owners, including chants about the new stadium and calls to sell the club.
That message was reinforced on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford, with the balloon display serving as a visual protest before kick-off.
