Manchester United are adjusting their plans to complete the £35 million transfer of Ederson after the midfielder received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad. The 26-year-old had been expected to undergo a medical and sign his contract in early July, but his inclusion in the Selecao squad may delay the process.
United have agreed a deal with Atalanta worth up to £38.8 million including add-ons, and a four-year contract with an option for an extra year has been agreed with the player. However, Ederson has yet to finalise the move, and his availability for pre-season is now uncertain.
Ederson was called up by manager Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday as a replacement for injured full-back Wesley. He is set to join the Brazil squad at their training base in New Jersey on Monday, with their World Cup campaign starting against Morocco on Saturday.
While it is not impossible for the transfer to be completed during the tournament, it would require the cooperation of the player and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). A more likely scenario is that Ederson will complete his medical and paperwork after Brazil's World Cup campaign ends, before taking a summer break.
The delay means Ederson will miss the start of pre-season training at Carrington, having previously been expected to be available for the July 18 friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki. He will now be granted time off after the tournament before reporting for pre-season.
