Manchester United's leadership is divided over the appointment of the club's next manager, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. Owners the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have initiated the search, but cannot agree on whether to appoint someone immediately or wait until the summer.
Candidates under consideration include Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca, Laurent Blanc, Xavi, Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane. Darren Fletcher has taken over on a caretaker basis and is expected to lead the team for the next two matches while a decision is made.
United's priority this season is securing a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, which is seen as too demanding for managerial novice Fletcher. The club could appoint Glasner from Crystal Palace in the coming weeks, but reservations remain about his experience at a club of United's stature.
Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are also under consideration, but appointing them would require waiting until after the World Cup, as both will be managing national teams. The delay raises concerns about further damage to the club's season.
Amorim was sacked after 14 months, following a 1-1 draw at Elland Road, though the decision was reportedly made before that match. United currently sit sixth in the table with one win in their last five games, and the minimum requirement for the next manager is a top-six finish.
