Man United writers pick starting XI vs Roma

Manchester United face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with the team looking to recover from a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend. United failed to take their chances in the first half before Chelsea struck twice early in the second half, condemning the Reds to a seventh defeat of the season.

Michael Carrick remains in charge despite United making their worst start to a campaign since 1986, and the upcoming November break will appear ominous if he fails to secure positive results this week. Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Patrick Dorgu are still unavailable, with Dorgu returning to training on Monday morning but the game having come too soon for him to feature.

Tyrone Marshall's selection

Tyrone Marshall believes the squad lacks answers on the bench, describing it as a group of out-of-form players playing with very little confidence. He would drop Martinez, who is suspended at the weekend but whose performances have been disastrous this season, bringing in Mazraoui at left-back and switching Dalot to right-back, with Yoro and De Ligt together in the middle.

Mainoo must come back into midfield, while Baleba gets another chance but has to improve. Marshall considered starting Lacey for the fearlessness of youth, but Amad looked lively at the weekend, so the front three remains unchanged.

Steven Railston's selection

Steven Railston would also take Martinez out of the team for Roma's visit, naming him on the bench in favour of starting Yoro, despite Martinez being suspended for the weekend game against Aston Villa. Mainoo blew the cobwebs away when he came on in the second half against Chelsea, his first minutes since returning from a minor injury, and that would have put him right to start against Roma.

Railston thought Amad played well against Chelsea despite missing a handful of big chances in the first half, but believes Lacey deserves a start.

Jack Flintham's selection

Jack Flintham notes that Dorgu's unavailability means United will have to make do at left-back again, with Heaven not ideal in that position but United benefiting from having at least one full-back in a natural role. Baleba and Mainoo did not start together on Saturday, but with Mainoo on media duty on Monday it feels likely he will start against the Italian side.

Flintham's attack remains unchanged, with Fernandes showing signs of his best form in the first half at Stamford Bridge and Amad doing almost everything right up until his finish. If Amad continues like that with a little more luck, he will get on the scoresheet.
