Man United to hold Martinez talks over future

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to hold talks with Lisandro Martinez over his attitude, performances, future and contract situation amid interest from several clubs. The Argentine defender has endured a turbulent few weeks at Old Trafford, having publicly criticised the club's hierarchy over their summer transfer business before being sent off in Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea.

Contract situation and speculation

Martinez has entered the final year of his contract, although United have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months. However, speculation surrounding his future has intensified following a series of controversial incidents both on and off the pitch.

The 28-year-old made headlines last month after taking aim at the club's hierarchy over a perceived lack of investment in the squad following United's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Despite Michael Carrick's side welcoming Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during the summer transfer window, Martinez expressed frustration over the lack of reinforcements and competition for places across the squad.

Recent disciplinary setback

The centre-back subsequently defended his controversial remarks and attempted to explain his frustrations, although he stopped short of issuing an apology. Matters worsened for Martinez on Saturday when he was sent off during United's defeat to Chelsea.

The Argentine conceded a penalty after striking Wesley Fofana in the face while challenging for the ball, with the incident earning him a second yellow card and leaving his side with 10 men.

Planned discussions and interest

It remains to be seen whether his latest disciplinary setback will influence United's thinking, but questions are increasingly being raised about his long-term future at Old Trafford.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United are planning to hold direct discussions with Martinez in the coming days and weeks before making a decision on his future. Club officials reportedly want to assess all available options, including whether to activate the one-year extension in his contract or allow him to depart when his current deal expires at the end of the season.

Romano claims the discussions will focus on several key issues, including Martinez's attitude, recent performances, future and contractual situation.

Interest from other clubs

Meanwhile, the defender is attracting interest from elsewhere, with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Como, Inter Milan and AS Roma all linked with a potential move. Spanish publication Sport reports that Barcelona have identified Martinez as one of several possible options to strengthen their defence, with Hansi Flick's side facing a growing injury crisis at the back.

Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Xavi Espart have all been affected by injuries, leaving Barcelona short of defensive options. However, the report suggests the Catalan giants would only consider a move for Martinez if a deal could be completed at a relatively low cost.
