Man United 3-2 Roma: Cunha inspires stunning comeback

Matheus Cunha inspired Manchester United to a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Roma at Old Trafford, ending a 54-day run without a win and easing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

The match, which saw United fall 2-0 behind inside the opening 20 minutes, was played against a backdrop of fan protests, with green-and-gold balloons released from the Stretford End and tennis balls thrown onto the pitch in a demonstration against the Glazer family's ownership.

Fan Protests and a Slow Start

Thousands of green-and-gold balloons floated out of the Stretford End as the teams emerged, reviving a protest movement that began 17 years ago. Tennis balls were launched onto the pitch at 20 minutes and five seconds, marking the year the Glazers took control of the club. By that point, United were already 2-0 down.

Roma scored twice down United's left flank in the first 17 minutes. Kobbie Mainoo lost possession for the first goal, with Matias Soule slotting past Senne Lammens. Minutes later, Ayden Heaven blocked a shot with his arm, and Donyell Malen converted the resulting penalty.

Diogo Dalot, deployed as an auxiliary left-winger, helped clear the pitch of tennis balls, which proved his most productive contribution at that stage. The tactical approach left United without a left-back, a decision that drew criticism as Roma exploited the space.

A Second-Half Revival

United's first meaningful effort came just before half-time when a floated Mainoo shot forced Roma's third-choice goalkeeper into a save. Early in the second half, Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring injury as he bore down on goal, the £70million midfielder collapsing in pain.

That injury sparked a frantic period. Cunha won a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes initially saw saved by Devis Vasquez, but a retake was ordered for encroachment and Fernandes lashed the second attempt into the roof of the net. Within seconds of the restart, Bryan Mbeumo hit both posts after being sent clear by Cunha.

Cunha Seals the Win

United's comeback appeared to be fading until Cunha took control. He converted Shea Lacey's cross on 83 minutes after a defensive error, then smashed in an unstoppable shot three minutes later to win the game.

Cunha was sent off in stoppage time for his furious celebrations, reappearing to clutch the badge on his chest before Carrick told him to get off the pitch. Carrick kept his composure throughout the second half, barely celebrating the goals and engaging in a tactical discussion with Steve Holland after the winner. The result gives Carrick breathing space and hands United their first victory in 54 days.
