Injury Crisis Threatens FA Cup Quarter-Final Showdown
Manchester City and Liverpool are facing significant injury concerns ahead of their highly anticipated FA Cup quarter-final clash at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Both managers, Pep Guardiola and Arne Slot, have provided crucial updates on player fitness, revealing that up to eleven players could miss this critical encounter.
Liverpool's Extensive Injury List
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered worrying news regarding several key players. The Reds, who have struggled to replicate their title-winning form from last season and suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brighton before the international break, are dealing with multiple absences.
Alexander Isak will definitely not start against Manchester City, according to Slot's assessment. "It will definitely be too fast to expect him in the starting line-up," the Liverpool boss confirmed. "He trained with us yesterday for the first time, and today, for the second time after exactly 101 days. So, it will take a bit of time... we will make sure we do the right thing in terms of building him up."
There is some positive news for Liverpool fans, however. Mohamed Salah is fit and available for selection after missing the Brighton defeat and international fixtures. Slot confirmed: "He is [fit]. He trained with us yesterday, he will train with us today and is available for the game tomorrow."
Further encouraging updates concern Federico Chiesa and Jeremie Frimpong, both of whom have returned to training after international duty concerns. Chiesa came back to Liverpool early, while Frimpong was withdrawn just 13 minutes after coming on for the Netherlands against Ecuador, but both participated in Thursday's training session.
Goalkeeper Alisson's Extended Absence
The situation is less promising for goalkeeper Alisson, who faces an extended period on the sidelines. Slot revealed: "He will not be part of the Paris Saint-Germain games as well. He will be out for a bit longer. Towards the end of the season, we expect him to be fit again."
Alisson, who had only recently returned from a previous injury, took to social media platform X to clarify his situation: "I didn't suffer a new injury. I'm in the treatment phase, and the plan is to be in full playing condition by the end of April!"
Liverpool's injury crisis extends further with Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni all undergoing surgery this season. None of these three players are expected to feature again this campaign, adding to Liverpool's selection headaches.
Manchester City's Defensive Concerns
While Manchester City have considerably fewer fitness worries than their opponents, Pep Guardiola is not without concerns. The Premier League champions are fresh off their Carabao Cup triumph over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, but face defensive issues ahead of Saturday's match.
Josko Gvardiol remains City's sole confirmed long-term absentee, but fellow defenders John Stones and Ruben Dias are also nursing concerns. Dias missed the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal with a hamstring complaint, but having enjoyed several weeks of rest, he could find himself in Saturday's squad.
Greater uncertainty surrounds John Stones following his withdrawal from the England squad earlier this week. Thomas Tuchel, delivering an injury assessment upon Stones' return to Manchester City, said: "John was gutted he had this minor incident, not a big injury. Given the history, we had to be careful; it made no sense to push him through and try stuff that could make it worse."
This FA Cup quarter-final promises to be a tactical battle between two of English football's top managers, with both forced to make significant adjustments due to their respective injury crises. The outcome may well be determined by which squad can best cope with their absentees in this high-stakes encounter at the Etihad Stadium.
