Manchester City has sparked anger among supporters after announcing plans to relocate 500 fans from behind the goal in the North Stand to make way for a new hospitality experience called 'City Hall'. The decision, part of the club's North Stand development due to open in early 2026, has been widely condemned.
The affected fans have been offered relocation to any available seat at their current price, a two-year price freeze, and the option to move with family or friends. However, many feel the move prioritises corporate hospitality over loyal supporters, with one fan describing it as 'a terrible look'.
Speaking on the Talking City podcast, MEN Chief City Correspondent Simon Bajkowski said the decision risks damaging trust. 'There is a storm coming, because fans dreamed of a blue wall. City know that for that reason people will be angry.' He noted that the club had taken positive steps in recent years, such as freezing season tickets and reducing matchday prices, but warned this move 'has swung it towards more criticism'.
City columnist Tyrone Marshall added that some fans feel the club has become more distant over the past five to six years, citing issues like the influx of opposition supporters at high-profile games. 'One made the point that City have always been good with the fans but they have become more distant... this is one of a number of issues.'
The new North Stand will also include the Cross Bar, a 300-capacity bar in the top tier, and will house more than 4,000 Flexi Season Ticket holders. The club has not yet commented on the backlash.
