Michael Carrick has been appointed interim head coach of Manchester United until the end of the season, replacing the sacked Ruben Amorim. The 44-year-old faces an immediate challenge to convince midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to remain at Old Trafford.
Mainoo has endured a difficult campaign under Amorim, making only one start in the Premier League this term. According to the Daily Mail, the 19-year-old's relationship with the United hierarchy is 'fragile' after failing to secure a new contract last year, and he has no intention of staying if his playing time continues to be limited.
Napoli are thought to be leading the chase for the England Under-21 international, with the Serie A side having previously profited from signing Scott McTominay from United in 2024. Carrick must now act swiftly to convince Mainoo to stay before the transfer window closes, or risk losing him on loan or permanently.
Darren Fletcher gave Mainoo a run-out in last weekend's FA Cup tie against Brighton, but his long-term future remains uncertain. Carrick, who knows the midfielder from his time as a coach, will need to build a strong rapport quickly.
Speaking after his appointment, Carrick said: 'Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here. There is still a lot to fight for this season.' He will now hope to persuade Mainoo that his future lies at the club.
