Maguire's New Contract Could End Man Utd Duo's Tenure

Harry Maguire has hinted he would like to sign a new contract at Manchester United, with his current deal set to expire next summer. The 32-year-old defender, who joined from Leicester City for £80m in August 2019, had a one-year extension triggered in January. Maguire said discussions are yet to take place but expects talks in the coming months.

“I’m sure over the next few months we’ll have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend,” Maguire said. “It’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.” He revealed that a couple of clubs had enquired about him but received a quick response from United.

Maguire did not start in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, with Matthijs de Ligt preferred as the central centre-back in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation. He came on as an 80th-minute substitute for Luke Shaw. Maguire acknowledged the competition for places, saying, “Me and Matthijs have been playing that central role, but also we can play either side in the back three.”

Despite the defeat, Maguire believes the club is in a better place than when he arrived. “We’re in a good place, positive as a club,” he said. “Since I started six years ago to where it is now, it’s in a completely different place in terms of the structure behind the management staff.”

In other news, United have appointed Stephen Torpey as academy director. Torpey joins from Brentford, where he led the rebuilding of the club’s youth structure.
