Harry Maguire has expressed his disbelief at Manchester United's failure to build on their progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked in November 2021. The centre-back's comments come amid speculation that the Norwegian could return to Old Trafford as caretaker manager following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel, Maguire said the team were 'so well organised' under Solskjaer and that he felt 'the best I've ever felt' during the first two seasons. He added that after finishing third and second, the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo raised expectations, but things 'never clicked'.
Maguire said: 'We just couldn't believe what happened. We brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo and you're thinking, let's go and win the Premier League. And it just never happened. It just never clicked.'
Solskjaer initially took charge in December 2018 on an interim basis before being appointed permanently. He led United to consecutive top-three finishes and the 2021 Europa League final, but a poor run of form led to his dismissal with the club seventh in the table.
Bruno Fernandes, signed by Solskjaer in January 2020, has been reported as receptive to the former manager's return. Meanwhile, former United midfielder Michael Carrick is also said to have been sounded out about a role, and Under-18s boss Darren Fletcher will take charge of Wednesday's match against Burnley.
