Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will trigger a one-year extension in Harry Maguire's contract, keeping the defender at Old Trafford until at least 2026. The 31-year-old former captain had entered the final six months of his current deal, sparking speculation over his future.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool, Amorim stated: “Harry Maguire we are going to trigger our option. I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot. Also, he has to improve as a leader.”
Maguire joined United from Leicester City for £80m in 2019 and has made over 200 appearances. He was stripped of the captaincy by former manager Erik ten Hag but has started the last four league games. Amorim emphasised the need for leadership, saying: “When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part.”
The centre-back came close to leaving in 2023 when West Ham agreed a £30m fee, but the move collapsed after Maguire opted to fight for his place. He has won the League Cup and FA Cup during his time at United.
Amorim also confirmed that winger Amad Diallo is nearing a new deal. Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton and Christian Eriksen are among those with contracts expiring in the summer.
